NAS Key West
NAS Key Westis a naval air station and military airport that works closely with nationalsecurity missions and operations such as the Department of Defense, theDepartment of Homeland Security, National Guard units and other federalagencies. They also have multiple annexes in and around the Key West area. In1823, the site where NAS Key West is today was a naval base established to stoppirates that were attacking wealthy shipping merchants in the lower Keys. InWWI, it became a naval submarine base and a year round training facility fornaval aviators, specifically with seaplanes. It became NAS Key West in 1940,serving as an operating and training base for aircraft squadrons before andafter WWII and was a crucial base for the US during the Cuban Missile Crisis.The station is also currently home of the US Army Special Forces UnderwaterTraining School.
