Fort Leavenworth

FortLeavenworth in Leavenworth County, Kansas, proudly boasts being the oldestactive army post west of the Mississippi. It was established in 1827 as a baseto protect the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon Trail, and thousands of peopletraveled through it during America's westward expansion. It was also the originof the buffalo soldiers in the West. In present day, it is home to the US ArmyCombined Arms Center as well as the Military Corrections Complex, whichcontains the DoD's only maximum security prison, the US Disciplinary Barracks.The base also is home to a low security prison, the Midwest Joint RegionalCorrectional Facility. Its longstanding history and missions have earned FortLeavenworth the title \"The Intellectual Center of the Army.\" The base islocated on a scenic byway and has over 1,000 buildings and 1,500 quarters.
