As far as that goes, you can expect to pay around $55 a month for a 5x5 unit, which is essentially like having an extra closet (see our size guide for more details on that) and around $150 a month for a 10x10 unit, which is kind of like having an entire extra room at your disposal. Most people like to store within one to three miles of where they live, so finding storage in your neighborhood is always ideal. Fortunately, in addition to being filled with great storage facilities, Louisville is filled with great neighborhoods. It’s a relatively safe city that’s brimming with beautiful scenery, up and coming restaurants and plenty of patio bars to enjoy sunny days on. And speaking of sunshine, if you like nature, you can look for housing (and storage) in the South Points area, home to a huge urban forest. If you like shopping, dining and mingling amongst students, look for an apartment in Louisville’s thriving Downtown neighborhood. Digging on the whole southern hipster vibe? You can’t do much better than carving out a home for yourself in NuLu (that’s a cute abbreviation for New Louisville), the home of flea markets, art galleries and even a bar in a former church. We don’t know about you, but we’re ready for mass. Don’t forget, no matter where you settle, you can find the best deals by searching for storage a few miles outside of your preferred area. Chances are, you won’t be visiting your unit that often anyway, so if you can get a great unit at a great price, it’ll be worth the commute. As a Louisville local, you’re a liiiiittttle tired of people only knowing your town as the place where the Kentucky Derby takes place, but you’re also more than a little excited when that majestic spring day comes around. In addition to enjoying two weeks of events like the largest fireworks display in the world, a marathon, a bunch of hot air balloons, a steamboat race and a parade with a giant inflatable Pegasus, you’ll also have to enjoy tons of traffic. Expect lots of detours, road closures and restricted roads. You can check with metro police for more information, or you can just save yourself some time by not planning any significant moving, packing or storage related journeys around that time. If you absolutely have to move or make a big trip to your storage unit, plan on lots of extra time. During the rest of the year, traffic in Louisville is pretty manageable, so long as you either avoid or plan for extra time in the area of Spaghetti Junction, which is where three busy interstates merge. This spot is especially nasty between 7AM and 9AM and 4PM and 6PM. Avoid these times, or opt for a storage facility that offers 24 hour access and enjoy the nice, traffic-free roads at 3AM. If you’re new to Kentucky and you’ve never lived in an area affected by these monsters of nature, it’s actually only a little bit like The Wizard of Oz. Typically, the Louisville area experiences two tornadoes a year. Yes, this sounds like a lot, but you can take comfort in knowing that it’s been a long, long time since the historic F5 tornado in 1974 that caused 86 injuries and six deaths. Most likely, your experience with a tornado will involve a warning and plenty of time to take shelter in a basement or in the innermost room of your home or office. It goes without saying that this is not a time to visit your storage unit, but this is a good time to consider the well-being of your items in storage.
